Secret Service Lacking Agents as Demand Soars

With the campaign trail driving up demand for Secret Service agents, the agency is straining to fulfil all its duties with its low supply of agents. In short, they are facing a manpower shortfall at a time of peak demand, the agency told Congress Tuesday.

The Secret Service currently has 6,200 agents, and is aiming to increase that number to 7,600 by fiscal year 2019, said Committee Chairman John Carter of Texas said at Tuesday's House Appropriations hearing.

At a hearing to review the agency's funding needs for the fiscal year starting on Oct. 1, Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy said that while they are making progress by hiring more agents, "we have yet to see the desired impact on our overall staffing levels due to increased attrition.”

Citing the loss of 19 agents in the last four months, perhaps due to the excessive overtime required on the president’s detail, on the campaign trail, and in the uniformed division, Carter asked if the agency’s hiring goals were actually attainable.

Clancy assured the committee that his agency is working on initiatives to recruit more applicants and retain quality agents.

Demands of the agency are seeing a sudden rise with Republican and Democratic national conventions set for summer, the general election in November, and presidential inaugural events in January, so these initiatives better work, and work quickly.
