During Police Week & Beyond, Take Time to Honor Federal Law Enforcement Officers

With this year’s National Police Week upon us, it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made daily by members of the federal law enforcement community. Law enforcement officers of all stripes, from state and local police to those working for the federal government, have had a trying year.

With the events in Ferguson, New York City and most recently Baltimore the public perception of law enforcement officers has declined significantly. While these controversial events tend to dominate media coverage of the profession, those in the law enforcement community know the dangers of the job and what officers put on the line every time they go on duty.

The FBI, as it traditionally does around this time of the year, recently released its crime figures report for 2014. The report showed that 51 members of law enforcement (all levels, not just federal) were killed in 2014. That number represents an 89% leap in deaths from 2013’s 27 reported officers killed. While the increase at first seems steep, it is important to note that 2013 had the lowest recorded officers killed number since 1980, and that 51 is the average of the years 2010-2014.

However, putting the number of officers killed in 2014 in perspective does not diminish its reflection on the dangers of the job. Being a law enforcement officer in this country carries with it an enormous amount of risk, and this risk is too often under acknowledged. National Police Week is more than an opportunity to honor those 51 who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2014: it is also a chance to appreciate the job being done by law enforcement officers in your daily life.
