FLEOA Interview with Mathew Silverman
FEDS Protection continues to be a proud partner of Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) – the largest "legislative voice" for the federal law enforcement community. FLEOA is often called upon to testify at congressional hearings and represent the overall position of the federal law enforcement profession. In order to protect federal law enforcement officers’ pay and benefits, FLEOA maintains a regular presence in Washington, DC. To date, FLEOA has played a pivotal role in the passing of important legislation that impacts federal law enforcement officers, i.e., Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP), Good Samaritan Act, Badge of Bravery, FERS Sick Leave Credit, NSPS repeal, etc. "
We chatted with Mathew Silverman, the newly elected National President. In addition to his lengthy track record of federal service, FLEOA members know that he is an honest, hardworking, and passionate leader who is willing to take any steps to help anyone in need.
FEDS: What’s your story and how did you get involved with FLEOA?
Mat: I’ve always wanted to put on a uniform and a badge from as early as I can remember. I started as volunteer fire fighter at very early age.
FEDS: I’ve had friends who chose law enforcement as a career due to unfortunate family trauma. It’s fascinating how many can feel called to a noble profession at pivotal parts of their childhood.
Mat: Definitely. I am proud to be part of an organization that can help change a negative path into a positive one.
FEDS: For the uninitiated, why is FLEOA’s voice so important to the federal law enforcement community?
Mat: FLEOA has a voice for all law enforcement associations across the country, and a voice that works with federal representatives. As laws are made at the federal level, state and local laws can adapt to them.
FEDS: What would you say to someone who is considering getting involved with FLEOA?
Mat: FLEOA is looking for people who want to use power for positive change. Happy employees who know they are desired and wanted are going to be more effective at their jobs. If you’re in law enforcement and are not a member, it’s crazy.
FEDS: What are some of the achievements that FLEOA has contributed to the law enforcement profession that you are most proud of?
Mat: Mental Health! Dr. Jean Kanakogi has been an integral part of the Public Safety Officer Benefits Program legislation. It’s so important for law enforcement to have the space and place to know there are other officers who have been where there are, so they don’t feel alone.
FEDS: Finish this sentence: “If FLEOA could accomplish one goal this year, it would be ____?
Mat: The passage of laws to change pay and benefits for all law enforcement agents and officers for greater equity which could also positively impact their wellbeing.
