FLETA Board Marks Law Enforcement Training Milestone
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board is celebrating its 20th anniversary, noting two decades of accrediting, and supporting the federal law enforcement community. The FLETA Board is the key accrediting body for all federal law enforcement training and support programs.
Becoming FLETA accredited means law enforcement agencies have met their rigorous training standards, which were developed by a team of public safety experts from a variety of federal and state agencies. FLETA was established through the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2002. The board was set up to standardize training, improve professionalism, and maintain public trust in federal law enforcement personnel.
Maintaining trust is an issue that remains at the forefront of the law enforcement community today. As President Biden said in his May Executive Order, “Public safety [therefore] depends on public trust, and public trust in turn requires that our criminal justice system as a whole embodies fair and equal treatment, transparency, and accountability.”
Agencies hoping to become FLETA accredited need to allow for an independent review of their program. They will be checked for compliance with FLETA Standards and Procedures related to administration, training staff, training development, and training delivery.
FLETA’s two decades of service was lauded by various federal agencies who work closely with FLETA. Those include Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). In a press release, TIGTA Inspector General J. Russell George said, “TIGTA's long-standing partnership with FLETA has propelled our academy and training programs to offer some of the highest levels of assurance, so that our special agents are prepared to protect the integrity of the Nation's tax system.”
Training organizations must renew their accreditation every five years, giving agencies an opportunity to enhance training procedures, and evolve to meet their ever-changing missions.
