How ICE Trains HEROs to Rescue Exploited Children

Many are surprised to discover the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has a sizeable branch devoted to investigating online child exploitation crimes. Not only does this unit exist, but ICE also trains military veterans for elite analyst careers in this field via its Human Exploitation Rescue Operative (HERO) program.

This week on FEDtalk, Julie Perkins of Shaw Bransford & Roth hosts Joe Arata, Chief of Recruitment and Retention and HERO Corps Program Manager at ICE to discuss this innovative child-rescue corps. Joining Mr. Arata are two Homeland Security Investigations agents who completed the 11-week intensive HERO training program and now work in the field.

For the final segment of the show, J. Christian, CEO of the National Association to Protect Children (Protect) will discuss his non-profit’s partnership with ICE’s HERO program which includes covering the costs of HEROs’ travel, their equipment, and relocation expenses.

The radio show airs Friday, October 21, at 11:00 a.m. ET. On Friday, stream online at Federal News Radio, or tune in to 1500 AM in the Washington, DC area.
