Operation Nazare Wave Arrests 264 Fugitives in DC Area

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) gave an update on the success of Operation Nazare Wave, a multi-agency effort to fight violence within the National Capital Region.

The operation, which was launched in April, has so far resulted in the arrest of 264 fugitives, and the recovery of 21 firearms, 5.7 kg of narcotics and nearly $255,000 in illicit cash.

Operation Nazare Wave will continue throughout the summer.

Assistance was provided by a slew of law enforcement agencies, including Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), one of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) three operation directorates.

“This operation provides another extraordinary example of how federal, state, and local partner law enforcement agencies can accomplish incredible things while working together,” said ERO Washington, D.C. Field Office Director Liana Castano.  “We all share the common goal of prioritizing public safety while providing the most secure environments for the people of our Washington, D.C. area communities.”

CARFTF Marks Anniversary

The operation coincides with the 20th anniversary of CARFTF, a congressionally funded multi-agency task force, focused on finding fugitives and reducing violence in the National Capital Region.

“The men and women of the task force work tirelessly, sacrificing many nights and weekends, assisting our partners with the often-dangerous task of investigating and apprehending violent fugitives. Their dedication to the USMS mission, to the communities we serve, and the resulting positive impact of their efforts are immeasurable,” said CARFTF Commander Chief Inspector Don Snider.

CARFTF spans five districts and is comprised of USMS criminal investigations and specially deputized task force officers. Law enforcement personnel from the District of Columbia, Eastern Virginia, Maryland, Western Virginia, and the D.C. Superior Court provide additional support.

Throughout its existence, CARFTF investigated and apprehended over 103,000 fugitives, including over 6,300 wanted for murder.
