Six Months Since Attack on Capitol, FBI Requests Continued Help from Public

July 6, 2021 marked six months since the U.S. Capitol riot where the Capitol was attacked by individuals who attempted to undermine the peaceful transition of power between presidents. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco met with investigators, analysts, prosecutors, and professional staff assigned to January 6th cases from the FBI’s Washington Field Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia to thank them for their work in arresting the perpetrators of the attack and encourage them to continue their efforts.

Later in the day, AG Garland and Deputy AG Monaco met with U.S. Capitol Police, thanking them for their bravery and sacrifice.

More than 535 defendants have been arrested across nearly all fifty states for their involvement in the attack. At least 165 defendants have been charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees. Approximately 140 police officers were assaulted January 6th at the Capitol including about 80 U.S. Capitol Police and about 60 from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.

Of the 535 arrested, almost 495 defendants have been charged with entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds and nearly 235 defendants have been charged with corruptly obstructing, influencing, or impeding an official proceeding, or attempting to do so.

Steven M. D’Antuono, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, said, “As we mark six months since the violence at our nation’s Capitol, we continue to encourage the public to send tips to the FBI. As we have seen with dozens of cases so far, the tips matter. Tipsters should rest assured that the FBI is working diligently behind the scenes to follow all investigative leads to verify tips from the public and bring these criminals to justice.”

Citizens from around the country have provided more than 200,000 digital media tips that helped lead to these arrests- almost three per day, including weekends. The FBI has released 11 new videos of suspects in violent assaults on federal officers on January 6th and is seeking the public’s help to identify them.
