House Judiciary Dems Call for IG Investigation into Alleged FBI Misconduct
Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA), Mondaire Jones (D-NY), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) of the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz on June 17, 2021 urging an investigation into alleged misconduct by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of the China Initiative.
Couple Sentenced for Conspiring to Steal Medical Secrets to Sell to China
According to a Department of Justice press release dated April 20, 2021, a 51-year old man from Dublin, Ohio, Yu Zhou, was sentenced to 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing scientific trade secrets related to exosomes and exosome isolation from Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Research Institute for personal financial gain and conspiring to commit wire fraud.
GSA Removes Drones Made in China from Contract Offerings
The General Services Administration (GSA) is no longer purchasing drones from Chinese manufacturers out of concern that they could be used to conduct espionage in the United States. All but five drone suppliers will be removed from the GSA offerings. This plan will go into effect on February 1, 2021.
Former CIA Employee Charged with Espionage
Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, 67, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer who worked for the agency from 1982-1989, allegedly conspired with his relative, also a former CIA officer, to communicate classified information from the U.S. government to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). He was charged with conspiracy to communicate national defense information to aid a foreign government and faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.
Member of Chinese Talent Plan Charged for Illegally Using U.S. Grants to Help China
Song Guo Zheng, a professor of rheumatology and researcher at various American universities, was charged with grant fraud after it was discovered that he used approximately $4.1 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to further China’s knowledge of immunology and rheumatology. Not only did he allegedly make false statements to his employers regarding his ties to the Chinese government, but he also allegedly attempted to steal intellectual property from the United States with the intention of taking it back to China.
